What is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile, formerly Google My Business, is the free listing that shows your business on Google Maps and in Search: address, hours, phone, photos and reviews. A complete, active profile is what matters most for appearing in the top three results on the map.

  • It is free and created at business.google.com
  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence
  • Verification is usually done with a short video
  • A well-kept profile can improve within weeks
Why it matters

Why does showing up on Google Maps matter?

Because the top three on the map get almost all the calls. When someone searches for “dentist”, “restaurant” or “hairdresser” nearby, Google first shows a map with three businesses. Most people pick one of those three, call or ask for directions, and stop looking.

You do not need to pay for ads to get into that group. You need a complete, active profile with good reviews.

Step-by-step guide

How do I put my business on Google Maps?

A Google Business Profile is free. These are the steps, in order:

  1. Check whether your business already exists

Search for your business name on Google Maps. Sometimes Google has already created a profile from other sources. If it exists, do not create another one: tap “Own this business?” to claim it.

  2. Create the profile

If it does not exist, go to business.google.com with your Google account and choose “Add business”. Use your real business name, without extra keywords or towns: Google can suspend profiles that do that.

  3. Choose the main category

It is one of the biggest ranking factors. Pick the most specific one (“Dentist” rather than “Health clinic”) and only add secondary categories that truly fit.

  4. Address or service area

If customers come to you, add the exact address. If you go to them, you can hide it and list the areas you serve instead, for example Estepona and Marbella.

  5. Verify the profile

Google needs to check that the business is yours. Today it usually asks for a short video showing the premises, the sign or your tools and a business document. Sometimes a phone call or email is enough.

  6. Log in and edit whenever you want

Signed in, search for your business name on Google or Google Maps and choose “Edit profile”. You can also go to business.google.com. That is where you change hours, photos and services and reply to reviews.

  7. Complete it 100%

Opening and holiday hours, phone, website, services with prices, description, attributes and 20+ real photos. Every detail is another reason for Google to show you.

  8. Get reviews and answer every one

Ask for a review after every visit and answer all of them, the bad ones too, in the reviewer’s language. A steady flow beats a big burst.

  9. Post every week

Offers, news and tips keep the profile fresh and give Google more to understand about your business.

No time for all this? That is exactly what we do for you.

Ranking on Google Maps

What decides your position on Google Maps?

Google says it ranks local results on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. This is how we work on them: (Source: Google Business Profile Help)

Relevance

Your profile says clearly what you do: the right category, services, description and posts that match what people search for.

Distance

How close you are to the person searching. You cannot change it, but you can make it clear where you are and which areas you serve.

Prominence

How well known your business is: reviews and rating, your website, mentions elsewhere and the same contact details everywhere.
